Max: “What does your company do?”
House of Baby: We are House of Baby, an artist duo creating spatial works using our backgrounds in painting, food and performance as material.
Each space is created as a unified artwork for guests to experience.
Max: “What are your roles?”
House of Baby: Tomio is our Creative Director, drawing on his background in Japanese painting and theatre.
Joseph leads on brand and the business side, pulling from experience in food, hospitality and digital design. We come from a wide mix of fields, and that breadth of background is something we actively lean on in our work.
Max: “What is the proudest moment in your career so far?”
House of Baby: Our proudest moment was witnessing people actually enter and interact with a space we created for the first time.
Our spatial works are only complete when real people engage with them.
Max: “What is it like being a part of the Bond House community?“
House of Baby: There have been quite a few new tenants recently, so we’re still getting to know people.
That said, we’ve recently connected with a stage set design studio and also met people in the shared kitchen.
We hope to build more connections where we can support and inspire each other in our careers.
Max: “What drew you to Bond House initially?”
House of Baby: Initially its proximity to the station. Being easy to access really helps our day-to-day work run smoothly.
I think lots of studios suffer from a feeling of isolation in their location but we don’t get that here.
Max: “Can you tell us about any exciting projects that you are working on at the moment?”
House of Baby: One of our current projects explores food as a material for artistic expression.
Another is a spatial work developed in collaboration with a team including dancers, a videographer, and a sound artist, and the collaborative process itself has been incredibly stimulating.
Max: “What does a typical day in the studio look like for you?”
House of Baby: Neither of us are early birds so we usually start slow, lots of tea, a quick regroup in the morning then we’ll split for some focus time.
Recently Tomio has been working on a number of projects, a painted paulownia wooden folding screen, bespoke tile painting and sculptural set design for a movement work, while Joseph’s been working on the final stages for the build of a new space in South London.
Max: “How important is location to your work?”
House of Baby: Creating the right environment directly affects how we approach our work, so location is extremely important to us.
Max: “If you were describing this studio to another creative or start-up, what would you say first?“
House of Baby: It’s a low-pressure, easy-going place to work.
Max: “Any future plans for Studio GRS1?”
House of Baby: We hope to move into a larger space at some point in the future as we continue to grow.’
